Dr. Krishna Iyer is the Chairman of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery and is widely regarded as one of India’s foremost paediatric cardiac surgeons. Renowned for his clinical expertise and extensive involvement in cardiac care for children across India and other developing countries, Dr. Iyer pioneered the first dedicated paediatric cardiac care program in Northern India in 1995 at the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (now Fortis-Escorts Heart Institute). Under his visionary leadership, this program has become a benchmark for paediatric cardiac care in India and its neighboring South East Asian countries.
Dr. Iyer has successfully operated on over 10,000 babies, children, and adults with congenital heart diseases, performing a wide range of complex procedures such as the arterial switch operation, double switch operation, TAPVC repairs, Fontan and Fontan-type procedures, corrections for tetralogy of Fallot, DORV, truncus arteriosus, Senning operation, conduit repairs, and many one-stage and multi-stage corrections for intricate congenital heart defects. He is credited with original work on rapid two-stage arterial switch procedures and performed India’s first successful rapid two-stage arterial switch and double-switch operation.
His current clinical interests include advancing complex neonatal cardiac surgery, cardiac surgery in malnourished infants and children, managing late presenters of congenital heart disease, and developing cost-effective cardiac care models for children in developing countries.
After his basic medical training, Dr. Iyer joined the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at AIIMS, where he served as Additional Professor before moving to Escorts Heart Institute to establish its paediatric cardiac care division. He completed advanced training in paediatric and infant cardiac surgery as a Senior Fellow under the mentorship of the esteemed Dr. R.B.B. Mee at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, in 1989.
Beyond his surgical work, Dr. Iyer is actively involved in several charitable initiatives for underprivileged children, most notably the ‘Gift of Life’ program by Rotary International.
