Dr. Vivek Vij is a renowned and pioneering figure in the field of Liver Transplant Surgery in India, with over 25 years of surgical experience. He currently serves as the Chairman – Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Sciences at the Fortis Group of Hospitals. Recognised for his visionary leadership and surgical excellence, Dr. Vij was honoured with a special award by the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) at its 2015 conference in Chicago.
A prolific academic contributor, Dr. Vij has authored over 50 national and international publications and presentations on liver surgery and transplantation. His research, especially in living donor liver transplants and medical management of liver disease, has been published in prestigious indexed journals, including the American Journal of Transplantation and Liver Transplantation.
In 2005, he became the only Indian surgeon selected for the Roche Preceptorship Training Program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA.
Dedicated to education and capacity-building, Dr. Vij leads a comprehensive fellowship program at Fortis, through which he has mentored and trained over 50 fellows, including surgeons and paramedical professionals.
Dr. Vivek Vij is credited with pioneering living donor liver transplantation in India, having formalised donor safety protocols that have enabled a 100% donor safety record. With his team, he has successfully conducted over 4,000 liver transplants, maintaining an impressive 97% patient survival rate and achieving the lowest biliary complication rate in the country — a testament to his commitment to surgical precision and patient outcomes.
